FTE Jerez (Flight Training Europe) is one of Europe's most established and respected independent flight schools. Operating from Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain for over 30 years, FTE has trained thousands of pilots who now fly for airlines worldwide. As the primary training partner for the British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy and with partnerships with Vueling and Iberia, FTE offers both self-sponsored and airline-pathway training in one of Europe's best flying environments.
Overview
FTE was founded in the early 1990s and has built a reputation for high-quality integrated pilot training. The school's location in Andalusia provides exceptional flying weather — over 300 days per year of clear skies — which means fewer training delays and a more efficient program. FTE's fleet includes modern single and multi-engine training aircraft, and its graduates have an excellent employment track record.
Selection: Cut-E/AON + PILAPT
FTE Jerez uses a dual assessment approach: Cut-E/AON cognitive aptitude tests combined with the PILAPT (Pilot Aptitude Test) psychomotor assessment. This combination provides a comprehensive evaluation of both intellectual and physical pilot aptitude.
The PILAPT component is particularly important at FTE. It uses hardware (joystick and pedals) to measure your ability to coordinate multiple inputs simultaneously — a direct simulation of the demands of flying an aircraft. Candidates who have practiced coordination exercises have a significant advantage.
Costs
The integrated ATPL(A) program at FTE Jerez costs approximately EUR 129,500. This covers all ground school tuition, flight training hours, examination fees, MCC/JOC and training materials. Accommodation in Jerez is available at reasonable rates (significantly cheaper than London or Amsterdam). Financing options are available through FTE's partner institutions.
Airline Partnerships
The BA Speedbird partnership is the flagship: selected BA cadets train at FTE Jerez with their entire training funded by British Airways. Self-sponsored FTE graduates benefit from the Vueling and Iberia connections, which provide employment pathways in the IAG (International Airlines Group) family.
Training Structure
The integrated ATPL program takes approximately 18-20 months:
Why Jerez?
Southern Spain's flying weather is a genuine competitive advantage. Over 300 flyable days per year means fewer cancellations, faster training progress and lower overall costs (fewer extra hours needed to catch up). Jerez is also affordable for students — cost of living is significantly lower than the UK, Netherlands or Scandinavia. The airport has dedicated training airspace and low commercial traffic, creating an ideal training environment.
How OnlinePilotTraining.com Helps You Prepare
Both the Cut-E/AON and PILAPT assessments used by FTE Jerez are core focus areas on OnlinePilotTraining.com. Our platform offers dedicated practice for all AON cognitive components as well as coordination and multitasking modules that mirror the PILAPT assessment. The combination of cognitive and psychomotor preparation is exactly what FTE's dual-assessment approach demands.
PILAPT focus: The PILAPT coordination test (ICOORD) is where many candidates struggle. Practice multi-axis coordination daily for at least 4-6 weeks before your assessment. Our sensorimotor modules build the muscle memory this test requires.
